This is the first that I have subscribed to alt.books.david.weber. I tried to
find an answer to my question, but wasn't able to find it anywher in the
thousands of posts, so my apologies if this has been discussed before.

I Recently re-read whole series from OBS to WOH, (all of the ones that I
had). Purchased Mission of Honor, supposedly the next book in the series, and
there was apparently a huge gap of history that had gone on during the
interim between the two even though there are no HH books listed between the
two. When I left, The Republic had thoroughly destroyed most of the Star
Kingdom's military power and when I returned, there had been a total
turnaround. Apparently, after a Battle of Manticore, The Star Kingdom had
totally reversed things and destroyed Haven's military, during which, among
other things McKeon, Giscard died, and, Honor had married Hamish.
The question is are these events chronicled somewhere and where, and why?

It looks like you've missed the main storyline book _At All Costs_, and
probably the two branch-off series _Shadow of Saganami_ + _Storm from
the Shadows_ and _Crown of Slaves_ + _Torch of Freedom_.

Thanks.

I've read _At all Costs_, but none of the others.
Why aren't they considered to be Honor Harrington books. Seems a bit strange
to me if they fill in the gaps.

If you have read AAC then why didn't you know about the Battle of
Manticore and Honor's wedding? Its not like they were minor easy to
miss events.

As for why the branched off series aren't considered Honor Harrington
books the answer is very simple, they aren't about her and she only
appears for a few scenes in any of them (and IIRC not at all in some).

The OP mentioned the Battle of Manticore on his first post; I think
the confusion lies in recognizing that the BoM actually put Manticore
in a position to essentially force Haven into surrender, despite
having lost Home Fleet; after all, At All Costs ends with Honor's
fleet being essentially tied down defending Manticore.

(Disclaimer: I have yet to read "Mission of Honor")

The main reason for this is that the Battle of Manticore demonstrated
that the Star Kingdom/Empire has demonstrated that it has the ability
to destroy anything Haven can put in space from beyond their effective
range. Basically, any encounter between a fleet armed with the new
missiles and *any* old-style fleet will be a one-sided massacre, and
there is not enough time for Haven to develop anything to counter it.
Manticore could go to any of Haven's planets, no matter how heavily
defended, and destroy any defensive or offensive units and occupy it.
So, for all intents and purposes, Haven has *no* fleet units to defend
itself with. In addition, they also lost a substantial number of ships
(by surrendering) *at* the Battle of Manticore. So despite the very
heavy losses for Manticore, Manticore emerged from that battle in a
position of absolute (if possibly temporary) dominance over Haven and
can dictate terms.

Wherever you got your listing from missed out "At All Costs" which is
the mainline Honor Harrington book between "War of Honor" and "Mission
of Honor".

As well as the mainline books there are also two side series which
split off around WoH and cover events away from the action of the
mainline series, though things are tying together more so I would
suggest reading them as well, including those the order of the books
from WoH onwards is:
"War of Honor"
"Crown of Slaves" (co-authored with Eric Flint)
"The Shadow of Saganami"
"At All Costs"
"Storm From the Shadows"
"Torch of Freedom" (also co-authored by Eric Flint)
"Mission of Honor"

As Shannon once said "Oops". I apparently skipped over _At All Costs_ this
time around. That's why I thought WOH was the latest I had. Although I have
re-read many of the series, I had only read AAC once before starting this
time. Thanks for pointing that out.

If you bought the Mission of Honor hardcover, you have them all on
the included CD.

Woah. I generally prefer to hold onto a book, so I never looked at
the earlier CDs.

I had meant to look into the offshoot series, since it was obvious in
the last book or two that there were other sources of HH material.

Nice to know that I can read them electronically if I want - though
given the time between AAC and WoH, I htnk I might space them out a
bit :).

I'm hoping that DW is energized to polish off the series, now that
he's taken a sabbatical. I can hardly blame him, though. After so many
books, it's got to be hard to keep writing in the same universe (just
like the Mutineer's Moon series).
