I am currently reading _Mission_of_Honor_. All these
years, I have assumed that Manticore is the British
Empire and that The Republic of Haven is France.

Who is the Solarian League ?

Who is Mesa ?

Who is Beowulf ?

Who is Grayson ?

Thanks,
Lynn

IIRC David Weber is getting away from "real world counterparts" in his
Honorverse.

He has definitely said that there was no real world counterpart for the
Solarian League.

He has commented on similarities between the US and Grayson (with a
side-order of Grayson = Japan).

Interestingly, David Weber has said that the Peoples Republic of Haven was a
US where the welfare state went terribly wrong.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

Gotcha. I found this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_locations_in_the_Honorverse
but it does not have any real world equivalences.

Authorial intent aside, though, the Solarian League would seem to be a
United States that went overboard with colonialism, just as Haven (aside from
the French parallels) is a too-welfare-state-ish America. Mesa is the United
States under complete corporate rule, and Grayson is the United States as of
Napoleonic times, more or less. :)

Pretty much every polity in the Honorverse is a reflection of some
political extrapolation of the real world, but not always the one that's tied
to the surface features of its culture. And as time has gone by, the
political theory has taken precendence over the cultural referents
(i.e. Haven may have started as pretty clearly France just pre-Napoleon, but
it took on a lot of "where America is going wrong" aspects as Weber got past
the first few books).

Dave Van Domelen, thinks maybe Lynx is New Zealand/Australia.

Why not Hawaii ?

(nearly part of one empire, taken over by another).

Well, Hawaii is distant from everyone, and Lynx is at least "near"
another polity...just not the one taking over.

Dave Van Domelen, does note that Lynx didn't even enter the scene until
after significant drift from "Napoleonic Wars In Space" had happened, though.

Nearest British territory to Hawaii (1200 miles) was probably Kiribati/
Tuvalu (then Gilbert & Ellice islands) so there is some parallel to the
creeping approach of the SL which was 1-2 months voyage away.

Some things that match did happen though, like the second war being
triggered by the refusal to return Malta / San Martin.
