Over the last few books in the Honorverse, I have noticed that there is
something missing: People's reactions.
We get no one's immediate reaction to hearing the news about anything.
Battle of Manticore: we see it happen, and then across the three books
that intersect that time, we never see anyone's reaction to receiving
the news about it. Weber always just skips over that part. We go from
people who haven't heard about it yet, to picking them up again a couple
of weeks after they learned about it.
Assassination attempt on Queen Berry: We get Elizabeth losing her
temper, and cancelling the summit but that's it. Where do we get Helen
Zilwicki's reaction to hearing that someone tried to kill her sister?
Green Pines: Again, where do we get Helen's reaction to the news that
her father is dead? It's implied that she's present when Mike Henke,
Oversteegan, and Terekhov are discussing it (they are there "with their
flag lieutenants") but no specific mention is made of Helen. Was she
really there, or had Terekhov given her some time off to deal on he own?
Either way, someone should have given some thought to her.
